About This Spot
Stepping into Restoran 83 Pokok Assam is like crossing into a familiar neighborhood ritual where everyday Chinese home cooking takes center stage. Nestled quietly within a residential pocket of Taiping, this unpretentious spot hums with a steady, cozy energy—part community gathering, part dinner relief after a day spent around town.
The pace here feels genuine and unhurried, with diners settling into round tables surrounded by soft chatter and the occasional clink of dishes being set down. Air-conditioned rooms offer a cooler retreat from the tropical warmth outside, inviting guests to linger over shared plates without hurry. There’s an easy ebb and flow to the service: attentive enough to clear tables promptly, yet with the familiar briskness you come to expect in a well-loved local spot during busy evenings.
Eating at Restoran 83 Pokok Assam is an experience rooted in the textures and flavors of traditional Chinese fare, enlivened by local Perak twists. The menu's offerings—bright, savory, and sometimes comfortingly rich—seem to reach across the table with familiar warmth. Whether it’s steamed fresh fish shimmering with delicate sauces, or stir-fried greens tossed with sambal heat, the focus is on honest ingredients prepared with care. There’s something quietly reassuring about the way food arrives at this place: fresh and thoughtfully balanced, never flashy, always satisfying in its simplicity. It’s a setting where you can experience the familiar pleasures of Chinese dining, yet with little moments of discovery—a particular sauce that surprises on your palate, or a rendition of a classic dish that feels just right in this corner of Taiping.
For those seeking a grounded, authentic meal in a relaxed, neighborhood environment, Restoran 83 Pokok Assam offers a genuine invitation. It’s not a polished spectacle, but rather a comforting pause—a place to appreciate food made with straightforward care and surrounded by the rhythms of everyday life.

Very reasonable price. Total 4 dishes + drinks only RM149.90.

The asam sauce fish was good. Would also recommend steamed ladies finger. The battered squid was average. Typical chinese restaurant round table seating with AC area available. Food was served fairly fast. A bit difficult to catch the servers attention after that for further requests. They were exceptionally quick to clear the food as soon as they saw we were done and I did feel it was abrupt. Will probably try other restaurants next time

This is our second visit to Restoran 83 Pokok Assam for dinner. This restaurant is located in the residential area and not too far from Taiping town. We chose to sit comfortably indoor where it’s cooler with air-conditioned and less noisy. We ordered a few dishes like Stir Fry Bitter Gourd Chicken, Minced Ginger Steamed Fish, Salted Egg Mantis Prawns, Steamed Tilapia Fish, Stir Fry Sambal Potato Leaves, Claypot Mixed Vegetables & Tofu and Black Pepper Pork with Mixed Vegetables. They also have other dishes like Crabmeat Tofu, Blanched Octopus, Fried Lala Clams, Sizzling Hot Plate Tofu, Pork Trotters etc. The food we ordered tasted delicious and satisfying… everything was very flavourful! This place is frequented by locals so visitors and tourists should give it a try too.

Reasonable price for portion. Food was fresh and tasty. Came during peak timing, place was very crowded. Waited 1 hour for food, but i suppose it cannot be helped. waiters were very efficient. Would recommend.

The food here is absolutely great! If you like heavy savory umami tastes like me, you'll like this place. Portion I'm gonna say is awesome, most importantly the price is reasonable. I mean I have visited so many times including first day of CNY I particularly booked this place to celebrate with family will come again in my next visit.

17 Nov. 1st visit to this restaurant. Since it was a Saturday, the restaurant was crowded and my guess is that it must be a good food restaurant . Service was fast and our dishes were served. I would agree that the food were delicious and price was reasonable too especially with the pork trotter & frog's leg dishes. Will definitely come back when going to Taiping

Local go-to spot for zi char family dinner located in Pokok Assam. Plenty of seats available- both air conditioned and outdoor seating available. Good portion with affordable pricing! Would recommend the boiled octopus, handmade tofu and salted egg mantis prawns. Kangkung was a tad too oily and fish wasn’t properly descaled.. Parking can be difficult to find.
